SARS-CoV-2, more commonly known as the coronavirus, enters the cell by using its surface protein called SPIKE. SPIKE is processed on the cell's surface through the serine protease TMPRSS2 and subsequently binds to the surface receptor ACE2.
The native SPIKE protein is a trimer and is located in the coronavirus membrane. Therefore to obtain pure & native SPIKE the trimer needs to be kept intact. We achieved this in three different ways:
