It is involved in tight junction and barrier formation in the lung epithelium, but also in mediating the osteoprotective effects of oestrogen. It has been identified as a regulator of lung homeostasis and is also involved in the proliferation of malignant cells found in lung adenocarcinomas, which makes it a potential therapeutic target in cancer.
